Midi and Maxi Dresses

Midi and Maxi Dresses for Work and Beyond

The longer hem has become a wardrobe anchor for good reason. Ann Taylor's midi and maxi dresses are cut to skim rather than cling, with hemlines that fall at the calf or sweep the floor for a silhouette that reads polished at a board meeting and relaxed on a Saturday. Fabric choices span structured crepe, fluid satin, and breathable cotton blends, so the category works across seasons without a second thought. If you're building a neutral base, the black midi and maxi dresses are the clearest starting point.

Prints, Solids, and How to Style Both

Floral midis in warm-weather prints layer easily under a blazer when the office runs cold. Solid-color maxis in muted tones anchor a look with minimal effort, and a fitted bodice keeps even the most relaxed silhouette from reading too casual. The range here skews toward cuts that hold their shape through a full day of wear.

• Rich brown and earth-tone midi dresses pair well with tan or cognac sandals and carry easily into early fall with a camel-colored cardigan.
• Floral and abstract prints read more polished when the fit is structured at the waist, and more relaxed when the silhouette skims straight down.
• A ruched or draped midi in a solid color works for occasions where you want the cut to do the work and the accessory to finish it.

Unexpected Lengths Worth Trying

The midi length in particular solves a real styling problem: it's long enough to feel intentional, short enough that flat shoes don't drag the proportion down. Denim midi dresses sit in their own category, offering the structure of a shirtdress with more coverage and a slightly more relaxed register than suiting.

• Maxi lengths in lightweight fabrics pack without wrinkling, making them a strong option for travel weeks or client dinners away from home.
• A midi with a side slit adds movement without sacrificing the longer hemline, and keeps the silhouette from feeling stiff on warmer days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a midi dress and a maxi dress?

A midi dress typically falls between the knee and the ankle, most often at mid-calf. A maxi dress falls at or near the ankle and can sweep the floor depending on the cut and the height of the wearer.

What shoes work best with midi and maxi dresses?

Block-heeled sandals and pointed-toe flats both work well with midi lengths. Maxis can carry flat sandals or heeled mules depending on the occasion. Avoid chunky sneakers with fitted silhouettes, as they tend to break the proportion of a longer hem.

Are Ann Taylor midi and maxi dresses appropriate for the office?

Many styles in this category are cut and fabricated specifically for professional settings. Crepe and structured knit options in solid colors or refined prints translate well to business casual and formal office environments. Styles with lower necklines or very relaxed fabrics are better suited for evenings or weekends.
